Foyles bookstore was a refurbishment fit-out package where we had a number of obstacles to overcome in order to meet the architects desired finish. We were faced with out-of-level screeds making it tricky for us to level through our WC floor tiling with the adjacent library areas, but we managed to break this out and apply levelling agents to finish the areas flush. We worked with the architect quite heavily on this package to produce the aesthetic they were after within the stair joinery units as there was a tricky concealed LED diffuser running the full length at the top which did not produce the ‘glow’ they were after when they were fitted as drawn but we managed to get working effectively for them, by tilting the light fitting to help deflect the light around our units properly.
At the Foyles Apartments, we had a number of challenges within the Specification;. For example a Softwood flooring was specified which was not fit for purpose and dented immediately and a frameless door detail set within dry-lined apertures that had +/-5mm/3m tolerance making it difficult to deliver to a high standard and defect free. We got around these issues by applying additional protection and replacing a small amount of flooring towards the end and scribing our doors into the openings to suit the wall tolerances.
It was a tough project but it was rewarding to work on a prestigious and well known London book shop.
